The site is located in the Stockholm archipelago and was in the early 1900’s inhabited by a gardener. For the past 30 years, a botanically interested mother and her two daughters have enjoyed the gardener’s house as a summer home. In recent years, as the daughters have formed families of their own, the old house proved too small. While one sister renovated an existing guest house, the other decided to build something new. The desired program – a kitchen, a bathroom, a dining area, a living room, four beds and storage space – had to fit within municipal constraints that restrict the building area to 40 m2.

Summerhouse T is organised as an open, square room with a standalone volume containing beds, kitchen, and storage. Along the building’s southern facade lay a dining area and a living area. The wooden ceiling, floor, and walls are stained dark, in order to enhance the building’s intimate character and focus attention towards the surrounding view. The house’s only door leads to the bathroom; a separate volume designed to snugly fit into an existing gap in the nearby rock.

The open plan, floor-to-ceiling windows, and freedom of movement along the entire facade make the small house seem quite large, in terms of both space and experience. The parents’ sleeping alcove enjoys a scenic view towards the lake and the woods, while the children’s nook faces grandma’s house. The centrally placed parallel kitchen is afforded contrasting views in opposite directions, while the combined dining and lounge area offers a 180-degree vista of the surroundings. Sliding glass partitions allow for cooling breezes to flow through the house, and extend the living area onto the outdoor deck, where an exaggerated roof overhang shields against the sun. On rainy days, water pours along the eaves almost like a curtain, and the house suddenly closes inward.

In the wake of an unfortunate fire, the client desired to upscale their business from a simple alpine restaurant to a more comprehensive program. This proposal for a straight-forward, rectangular building with ribbon windows and a pitched roof comprises an open kitchen restaurant with a bar, a lounge with a fireplace, offices, and utility spaces. A flexible mezzanine floor, hovering within the volume, separates the double-height lounge and dining spaces. Visual connections between the lower and upper levels are afforded along the mezzanine perimeter, as well as through a circular opening, which, pierced by the conical chimney stack, makes an eye-catching centerpiece. Dark-stained pine plywood envelops the interior surfaces, encouraging visitors to enjoy the white crispness of the ski slope above, or the vastness of the valley below.

By placing the two-storey, rectangular volume across the direction of the linear site, it is split into two very different spaces: a neatly organised, grassy garden on one side, and on the other, a dramatically rocky slope, facing a lake and a nature reserve. The client desired an open, social ground floor and an intimate, private first floor. Thus, the spacious ground floor is fully glazed, with an open plan that is subtly divided into kitchen, dining room, entrance, living room and library by means of variations in ceiling height and geometry. The first floor, cantilevering from the ground floor so as to offer shade and weather protection along its perimeter, is accessed through stairs hidden at opposite ends of the building. Housing bedrooms, bathrooms and a study, the upper level can be regarded as an inversion of the lower: externally clad with aluminum panels and locally pierced by ribbon windows. From recessed balconies adjoining the bedrooms, the family members can enjoy the lakeview in private. &#38;nbsp;

Parkaden, designed by Hans Asplund in 1963, is a fascinating brutalist gem – simultaneously simple and expressive, humble and monumental, functional and decorative. However, Stockholm’s single grade I listed parking garage is perpetually outshined by its neighbour – the iconic turn-of-the-century department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), for the needs of which Parkaden was initially constructed. 

The proposal, awarded first prize in an invited competition, makes a thorough inventory and analysis of the building’s current state, and suggests a careful yet thorough renovation of its run-down and neglected interior and exterior. Highlighting its straightforward materiality, structural logic and functional ornamentation, the proposal wishes to consolidate Parkaden’s position as historical and architectural icon. In order to improve the everyday user experience, the proposal addresses visual orientation and safety, and suggests opening up spaces for public activities. 

Hopefully, this will afford Parkaden an identity as a younger, edgier family member – a memorable passage between the bustle of the street and the nostalgic glamour of NK.

Located on the northern waterway to Stockholm, Stäketfläcken has since the 17th century developed a rich tradition of crafts, brickyards and small industries. The proposal for housing, workshops and businesses, a marina and a public nature park along the canal, is inspired by this particular history. In a playful interpretation of “towers in park” – albeit on a scale befitting of the site – brick buildings are arranged in an alternately linear and scattered pattern, so as to enhance the green and blue natural elements, as well as to diversify the spatial experience along both land and water routes.&#38;nbsp;

The sensation of a tree-lined path, with its long perspective, steady rhythm of trunks and scattered rays of sunshine, is sublime. In the King’s Garden of Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen, one enjoys this mystical power, above all, in Damegangen and Kavalergangen. Questions on how to architecturally mimic, expand and enhance this experience lay at the core of the pavilion design. 

The plan is devised as a wooden cross, where each end invites the visitor to a stylised promenade. Evenly spaced columns reference passing tree trunks, and a slatted roof filters the light like a tree crown – effectively extending the overall choreography of the Garden. Accessible from all directions, the pavilion has no front or back: the edges of the elongated walkways offer places to sit, from which one can gaze at and/or interact with the four smaller outdoor spaces created by the cruciform plan. Framed by hedges, trees, grass or a building respectively, these outdoor spaces each have unique and distinct qualities. Large broad-leaf trees give shade and an intimate character to the first space. Abutting the existing Hercules Pavilion’s café and cultural activities, the second space is intended for grabbing a coffee while contemplating the movement of the Kavalergang. The third space is a large lawn programmed to inspire football, Tai chi, or simply running around in the grass. An open stage dominates the fourth space, which is surrounded by existing greenery. 

Despite the consistent section of the pavilion, the spatial experience changes depending on the direction of movement, which space one passes, or where the sun hits at a certain moment. As the visitor picks up a slight scent of pinewood, hears the floor slats creaking underfoot, and brushes the columns with their fingertips, the sensuous experience of the pavilion is enhanced.

Twelve Scandinavian architecture practices were invited to contribute to the&#38;nbsp;exhibition Commoning Kits, initiated by Kjellander Sjöberg, at Form/Design Center in Malmö. Each practice was to imagine new public spaces centered around a specific theme, on a specific&#38;nbsp;site in the Sege Park area just outside Malmö. For this proposal, the site is an old apple orchard and the theme “religion”.
The intention was to capture a universal sense of spirituality, not particular to any religion. After initial research into the Garden of Eden and the Court of Oranges of the Córdoba Mosque, the idea of a levitating orchard came to mind. The proposal was exhibited with a short story:

“The morning that the apple orchard slowly rose to the sky, no one believed their eyes. The child, the scientist, the artist, and the idiot all failed to explain what had happened. And although it began as something frightening, almost unbearable, the orchard eventually came to spread a sense of calm that was difficult to comprehend. A sense of security. Perhaps because failing to understand was something they did together.

Earlier, when the orchard was still attached to the ground, it had been a popular spot for the locals. People made excursions there, spent entire days in the shade of its trees, ate apples and played in the grass. Some had named it Paradise. Now, floating above the ground, it had become even more divine.

In the beginning, the orchard remained at a constant height. After a while, however, it started to slowly move up and down. Different spaces came to emerge between the orchard and the ground, each with a character of its own. The people were initially suspicious, but in time they began to carefully approach the spaces. With increasing confidence, they determined what they could be and how they could be used.

Although the orchard had been popular before it rose to the sky, only a few seem to miss it. A shrinking group of people remembers it, and from the ground it cannot be grasped. Only the still orderly rows of apple trees give it away. Some are surprised by the fact that the orchard’s trees and grass do not grow. They wonder if nature no longer needs to be tamed. 

The majority, however, think about the space, or rather the many spaces, underneath the orchard. Judging from its movements, it appears to almost understand people’s needs and deepest desires. Sometimes, it creates low spaces for intimate encounters. At other times, vast, open spaces reminiscent of the infinite. Or the unattainable.”

Three large volumes are wedged into a dramatic, forested hillside facing the lake inlet to central Stockholm. Aware of their scale, the buildings are carefully stepped in order not to overpower the surrounding architecture or block water views. In addition, by allowing greenery to grow wild in the gaps between the buildings, they attempt to integrate and interweave the natural and the urban. 

Rational organisation and modular construction allow for efficient on-site assembly – a must, given the site’s rich vegetation and demanding topography. Conceived of as rectangular blocks wrapped in a gridded loggia, each unit enjoys a generous balcony space on each side – some even on three sides – of the apartment. The one to four bedroom apartments are characterized by openness, freedom of movement and full-height windows in at least two directions. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 

As an homage to the colour palette of the surrounding 1980’s buildings, the façade is made from pigmented pink concrete, and the balcony railings from pink textured glass. Cast against a wavy surface, these prefab elements come alive, like ripples on water.

The new exhibition space Deus Ex Machina is the visitor’s first encounter with ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design. Centrally placed and circularly shaped, it accentuates the importance of the main entrance space like a dot on a map and greets visitors into an open area from which they get an immediate overview of the different activities on offer. Deus Ex Machina offers a robust, flexible space that symbolizes a long-awaited fresh start for ArkDes, intending to give room for smaller, temporary, topical and unconventional exhibitions. 

Beyond its symbolism, the round shape is conceived of as a response to, and dialogue with, the orthogonality of the existing exhibition space. The interplay between curved and straight walls, the expansion and contraction of space, dramatizes the movement around the pavilion. Cut open in strategical places, the solitary wooden cylinder affords views of and intuitive movement between various programs and spaces. 

Orientation through the volume is further clarified by the exposed roof structure, where the wooden beams span between the different openings, producing a distorted grid. This distortion is subsequently reflected in the exposed columns, placed in an irregular rhythm and angled according to the direction of the corresponding beam. Thus, a certain tension emerges between the overall straightforward geometry of Deus Ex Machina, and its structure seemingly abiding by its own logic – combining rationality and economy with playfulness and identity.
