COMPETITION

Tyresta nature preserve, a well-visited but somewhat under-equipped National park located south-east of Stockholm, called for proposals for multifunctional, weather-proof and clearly identifiable entrance pavilions. The pavilions are intended to serve as start and end points for hiking trails. Traditionally, these points are marked with red dots on tree trunks – a strong symbol in both shape and colour. This proposal interprets the well-known symbol as a circular pavilion crowned with a red vegetated roof. The round shape lacks directionality and is thus welcoming on all sides, whereas the roof slopes to face the incoming visitor with its red colour and opens towards the surrounding landscape soon to be explored.

Cross-laminated timber elements stabilise the post-and-beam construction and provide spaces for maps and notice boards, seating areas and packing stations. Cruciform elements act as windbreakers, where at least one seat is always protected. A grid of round timber columns supports the roof, resembling a miniature forest with local clearings. Roof beams are exposed underneath the roof, like the web of branches under a tree crown.
