RÖHSSKA MUSEUM OF DESIGN AND CRAFT
Preparing an extensive relaunch, the museum wished to improve functionality, accessibility and first impressions in the entrance and shop area. The strong geometry of both the space in question and the museum’s logotype – a bold Ö – inspired the designs of a new reception desk as well as multi-functional furniture. All additions are intended to be reversable, so as not to damage the historically significant architecture.
Wedged inside a vaulted wall opening, the Ö-shaped reception desk is a manifestation of the interplay between the old and new Röhsska; welcoming visitors with an informal, contemporary playfulness that offsets the dignified, early 20th century elegance.
Tilted horizontally, the Ö also lends itself well to a series of furniture, including various seating arrangements, display podiums and shelving. The round, extruded shapes make sculptural, functional elements that improve the flow and accessibility of the multi-directional entrance area.
