ICA is known as Sweden’s largest food retailer, but is
also a major property manager and developer, with a considerable,
ever-increasing building stock all over the country. Closely monitoring
competitors and consumer habits, as well as tendencies in social and urban
development, they identified a need to develop a design strategy and strengthen
their architectural identity.
The ICA Design Manual is a part inspirational, part instructive document illustrating how attractive physical space is linked not only to branding, but to social, economical, ecological and sustainability. It provides a comprehensive yet accessible framework for how to improve architectural quality, from the urban context down to the minute detail, in new-builds as well as renovations. Well aware of the unique conditions of every site, the Manual considers three typical establishments on three different scales: the retail park, the urban centre and the city block. A stringent yet flexible architectural concept based on rational construction, robust materiality, careful detailing and a sober choice of accents intends to consolidate ICA’s long-time role as not only food sellers, but place-makers.
